So, I registered for my first Vancouver Sun Run.
The Vancouver Sun Run is an annual 10 Km run held in Vancouver. Although, I have no aspirations of winning the Sun Run, I do have intentions of posting a decent time. I am by no means a runner, but I do know I have heart. With my runners and my iPhone I know this is achievable.
My goals is to finish the 10 Km in under 60 mins. Here I will log how that goes.
No more time for talk, let’s do it…

Went for my first run today with Cesar, Jeriq and Paula. My first day of training consisted of 10 laps around a 400 m track. We failed to time the run but this I can say. I have not in recent memory finished 10 laps around a track without stopping. I guess this was a good step and a moment of clarity that I can do anything that I put my mind and heart to.

I ran 4.0 km in 33 mins, in pouring rain. This puts me on pace to complete 10 km in 85.5 mins. It looks like I have to pick up the pace.
Monday, 25 January 2010 Additional
About an hour after my first run, I went around the same route again with my sister and Eric. Unfortunately, I got a call mid-run and the gps tracker on iPhone paused and did not resume after the call. I couldn’t get an acurate time. But I believe, if my math serves me right, that my second run time was 35 mins. At the end of the day, I ran about 8 km today. Hopefully, I’ll be able to sleep nicely tonight… unlike the night before.

FAIL. I failed to complete my route today. My feet started to fail on me only 1 km into the run. I feel bad for not completing the route today. I’m tempted to run after our meeting tonight… Probably not going to happen though. I need to find the motivation…

Considering registering for Harry’s Spring Run-Off for March 7 as a tune up for the Sun Run. This 8km run should gauge how prepared I will be for the Sun Run.

Went for a 15 lap 6km run with Cesar, my “running coach”. I’ve never run this far without stopping. I was so pleased with my performance, I managed to cut +20 seconds from my lap time on the last lap only to find out that we were 1 lap short of 15. RATS!!!! I feel so cheated… by skills that a 1st grader should have. Til’ Next time…

Fail. I had about an hour to kill and I thought I would go and try to run 8km this day. Unfortunately, Cesar was not able to come with me, but I ended up running anyway. It seems that I don’t have the motivation without someone there to encourage me. I stopped at 4km walk a lap or to then brought it in. I’m so disappointed in myself.

The road to redemption is a rocky road. After the failure of the previous day, I managed to convince Anna, Eric, Len, Kiki, and Cesar to run with me. It started raining but we continued anyways. After about 2.5km I could not seem to find the energy or motivation to keep going. I decide to run some sprints, walking then sprinting 50-100m. Interestingly enough another person on the track decided to give me pointers on my running technique.
On the way home, both legs (calves and quads) severely cramped and spasmed. As i stepped over a ledge one leg locked up and then the other as i stepped with the other. So i was left with two legs locked up, slowly falling on my back. As I lay on the sidewalk with Eric and Cesar stretching my calves whiel at the same time streching my quads. I’m sure it looked like a scene from some soft core porn movies for passer bys.I later realized that I had not had any liquids that day and all that cramping was liekly due to dehydration.
The road to the Sun Run continues…
Monday, February 22, 2010,
It has been almost three weeks since my last entry. For those actually following my progress, you may be wondering how my progress has been. Well… blame it on the Olympics, blame it on being sick, or blame it on the weather; I haven’t run since my last entry. The Harry Rossen Run Off is 13 days from today! Oh no!
Although I haven’t been running, I haven’t been completely inactive. I’ve still been in the gym, played basketball, and been on long walks to explore the Olympics City of Vancouver.
Dang… time to get back on track!
Thusday 1 April 2010
Again… it’s been a while since my last post about this topic. I’ve been busy with other things. You’ll see some of my activities int he newer posts.
Although I haven’t been running lately, I’ve been concentrating on eating healthier to loose some weight for the run. I figure 5-10lbs less to lug around during a 10km would help.
Gonna start training for the run again soon. Wish me luck!
Sunday,9 April 2010 Final Entry… For now
I may not have the greatest time. The winner could have lapped me twice. But the journey was awesome! The road leading to it (in hind sight) was a reaffirmation that we can accomplish anything we we put our hearts and mind to.
Below is a song that really inspired my to continue pushing when my legs had decide to give out and cramp up with 2 Km left.
Alive Again – Matt Maher
I woke up in darkness
surrounded by silence
oh where, where have I gone?
I woke to reality
losing its grip on me
oh where, where have I gone?
Cause I can see the light
before I see the sunriseYou called and you shouted
broke through my deafness
now I’m breathing in
and breathing out
I’m alive again! You shattered my darkness
washed away my blindness
now I’m breathing in
and breathing out
I’m alive again!Late have I loved you,
you waited for me,
I searched for you…
what took me so long?
I was looking outside
as if love would ever want to hide
I’m finding I was wrong
Cause I can feel the wind
before it hits my skinYou called and you shouted
broke through my deafness
now I’m breathing in
and breathing out
I’m alive again! You shattered my darkness
washed away my blindness
now I’m breathing in
and breathing out
I’m alive again! I’m alive again!Cause I want you!
Yes, I want you,
I need you
And I’ll do what ever I have to
Just to get through
cause I love you
Yeah, I love you!You called and you shouted
broke through my deafness
now I’m breathing in
and breathing out
I’m alive again! You shattered my darkness
washed away my blindness
now I’m breathing in
and breathing out
I’m alive again!
Well… for those who have taken the time to follow my journey to completing my first Sun Run, Thank you! Hopefully my ramblings have inspired you to reach for a goal that you may see as impossible.
